Explanations

“I desire the spirit of God to know and understand myself[.] I desire a fruitful, active mind, that I may be able to comprehend the designs of God, when revealed through his servants without doubting.”
--Emma Smith
(read with no small amount of irony in Daughters of My Kingdom: The History and Work of Relief Society)

"All that is gold does not glitter... Not all those who wander are lost."
--The Fellowship of the Ring, by J.R.R Tolkien
(and, conversely, "all that glitters is not gold"--The Merchant of Venice, by William Shakespeare)

These two concepts are my starting point.

  1. Oh wow! I love both quotes. I love the first one. The words you chose for your blog title are awesome. A fruitful active mind. That is something I never have had, but have been forced into recently. I still find it exahsting to actually think. I like being told what to do and think. I am lazy like that. The only bad thing about that is that you have everyone to blame for things that go wrong. Much better to think for yourself.

The second quote. Of course I have heard it before, but never really thought about it. LOVE all those that wander are not lost. So true. I was always taught that doubt was so bad. Now I tell myself to doubt is healthy and wise. Doubt and find out the truth for yourself.

  2. Okay duh I just realized that the title of your blog is the second quote, but the address is the first. Very nice!

  3. Thanks, I liked it. :) I really wanted to use the Tolkien quote for the URL, but let me tell you, EVERY SINGLE VERSION of that line has already been taken. Most of them are blogs that haven't been touched since 2003, too, which is frustrating. But I think it worked out pretty well, so it's okay.

  4. Oh my gosh, I really love these quotes. Especially the second one. I've had people imply that their life if better than mine because of their faith (still friends with them, as annoying as they can be sometimes). Now I'll have a response!
